Know your audience
Do your research, even if you’re just giving a gift card. Make an effort to choose something they’ll like. Better yet, suggest the group circulate a secret Santa questionnaire or wish list beforehand.
Make an entrance
Maybe you’re a genius wrapper (gift wrapper, that is). But then again maybe you’re not. In that case, a delivered gift always makes a big entrance. Especially when the packaging is playful. Plus, they’ll be surprised and feel special when the package shows up at the office or their doorstep.

Don’t go for the gag
No one wants the gag gift. It really means you just thoughtlessly grabbed something at the last minute. Take the time to give a gift you’re pretty sure they’ll love.
Make it an adventure
There’s no rule that says you have to limit yourself to a gift that's tangible. Gift them an experience like a movie theater gift card, a cooking class, or a flying trapeze lesson.
Make ‘em laugh
Humor is the gift that keeps giving. (So are monthly clubs...) Bonus points if it’s a nod to your favorite inside joke. Give your officemate a witty mug, a joke of the day calendar, or something else that makes them laugh, and think of you every time they see it.
More treats, less tchotchkes
Let’s face it, as adorable as they are, a lot of those desk / corporate gifts are going to end up in another gift exchange. Holly-sprinkled dipped strawberries, on the other hand, will most likely end up in their belly. Just make sure you’re aware of any allergies or dietary restrictions.
Stay within budget
Spend the agreed upon amount. You don’t want to seem to cheap, or show off and make the other person feel awkward if they didn’t splurge.
Include a receipt
Especially if you opt for accessories, like a chic scarf or a cute tote, or anything that is a specific size. Include a receipt so they can exchange the gift if it isn’t quite their style or size.
