Tips for Selecting the Perfect Mango

A delicious mango experience begins with selecting the best fruit. Keep these tips in mind when you're at the grocery store:

  • The mango should have some give when you squeeze it
  • The stem of the mango should have a fruity smell
  • Remember, the color of the mango does not necessarily indicate its ripeness

Mangos are so delicious, you'll want to enjoy them all year long. That being said, they are best in the spring time. When you bring them home from the store, they can be stored at room temperature for a couple of days. Once they're sliced, they should go in the refrigerator.

How to Cut a Mango

Method 1: Hedgehog Style

Named for the resulting hedgehog-like appearance, this method is perfect for easy snacking.

  1. Use your hand to stand the mango up on a cutting board.
  2. With your other hand, slice down vertically on one side of the mango. The center of the mango contains a pit that is too difficult to cut through.
  3. Slice vertically down the opposite side of the mango. This should leave you with three slices.
  4. Place the center slice containing the pit to the side. Pick up one of the two side slices and place it skin side down on your cutting board.
  5. Carefully cut horizontal and vertical slices into the mango flesh, taking care not to cut through the skin of the fruit.
  6. Grasp the mango slice on either side, then slowly press down. This should cause the mango flesh to pop out.
  7. You can serve the mango this way, or you can use your knife to remove the mango pieces from the skin.
